Congratulations to Will D (SCAPA Voice) for winning the encouragement award and Elena B (SCAPA Voice) for winning Outstanding Sophomore at the Fall 2023 Schmidt Vocal Competition at Vanderbilt University.
Abigayle S. (SCAPA Voice) was chosen for the prestigious Songbook Academy® summer music program hosted by 5-time GRAMMY nominee Michael Feinstein. Out of hundreds of applications nationwide, 40 finalists from 16 states were selected to participate in this year's Songbook Academy summer intensive, an acclaimed preprofessional music program for young singers focusing on the timeless standards of jazz, pop, Broadway and Hollywood. Abigayle was selected as one of eight finalists to perform throughout the week.
From Colin C: (Voice) I was part of the Kentucky Musicians Abroad choir. Performing in these incredible historic and sacred places was amazing. I loved experiencing international travel, visiting amazing places, and seeing famous landmarks. Being in Switzerland and seeing the Matterhorn and the natural beauty of that country was the highlight of the trip.
Other Lafayette students that participated in KMA included: Choir: Eli B. ('22), Kimberly C, Colin C (SCAPA Voice), Ainsley H, Ruby L, Parker O (SCAPA Voice), Kara P (SCAPA Voice), Katarina S (SCAPA Voice), Aubrey Y (SCAPA Voice). Gabe B (SCAPA Band) also participated in the KMA Band. We are excited to announce that the Lafayette Madrigal Singers have earned two prestigious invitations this year! Based upon blind audition recordings, the group was selected to present featured performances at the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference and the American Choral Directors Association Southern Division Conference in February 2024. An invitation to perform for music conferences are one of the highest honors a scholastic ensemble can receive. We are grateful to the Madrigal Singers alumni whose dedication to excellence in choral singing made these incredible opportunities possible.
Each year, Lafayette sends dozens of students to participate in the life-changing experience that is Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. Here is what two of our students said about their experience:
From Gus R: (Voice) GSA was one of the best experiences of my life. I learned an insane amount about my art form and learned very specific things that mean a lot as a vocal major and as someone who wants to do something with music after college and as a full-time job. I met really good friends and connected with everyone, you never feel left out, and you should never feel nervous or embarrassed about your art because everyone there is an artist, you are surrounded by people who also create and fail at creating a specific project or task they have their mind set on. something I really learned is that if people have recognized that you have talent, you have talent and you have no reason to be nervous while performing or creating in front of an audience. From Tate W: (Dance/Theatre) This summer I was part of the Governor's School for the Arts program. I stayed on UK's campus for 3 weeks and studied dance every day. It was an amazing opportunity. Congratulations to the Lafayette Choir students who were accepted to GSA 2023. Zade A. (voice), Katie B. (musical theatre), Annelise B. (voice), Clementine C. (musical theatre), Sienna J. (musical theatre) Meredith K. (voice), Gus R. (voice), Ashlyn T. (voice), Bella W. (voice), Tate W. (dance). Lafayette had 42 accepted to GSA 2023. Lafayette’s Mastering Musicianship Program, known as M2, provides for individual music lessons over a 12-week session each semester. (Enrollment is open at the beginning of each semester.) The advantages to this program are cost and convenience. The rate for private lessons in Lexington is well over $15 per half-hour lesson. The M2 program at Lafayette is only $150 for current choir students for the 10-week session.
